There often seems to be a lot of confusion about where precisely in the UK “The North” begins. I’ve just seen a particularly egregious example in which a friend who hails from the Birmingham area (strictly speaking, Coventry, I understand) appeared to be being somewhat scornful of Northerners, apparently blissfully unaware that if he is from Birmingham (or Coventry), then he is, by definition, a Northerner himself.
It’s very simple. Latitude doesn’t lie.

Um, never mind the issue of the “mid” in Midlands, you can’t conflate Birmingham and Coventry like that. It’s like saying Southampton is a suburb of Portsmouth.

Well as everyone knows, the Midlands is a region of the North (out on a limb now, may as well go for it, right?) 🙂
But I can see there is clear white space on the map, so I’ll withdraw the assertion that Coventry is in the “Birmingham Area”.
It’s still in the North, though. 🙂

Apparently, the road signs on the M1 stop saying “North” at around Nottingham/ Grantham.

That’s curious. I’ve driven up (and down) that road a lot, but never thought to check.
But I’m still holding onto Watford Gap as the most recognised boundary! 🙂
